The basics
Overspray is spray polyurethane foam that drifted off its intended target during application — usually carried by wind — and landed on a nearby surface it wasn't meant to touch, where it cured in place. The foam itself cured normally; it's simply in the wrong location.
Not necessarily the foam job itself — the foam that ended up on the intended surface can be installed perfectly. Overspray is a separate, secondary issue caused by wind, masking gaps, or applicator technique during that job.
No. Off-ratio foam is a chemistry and curing defect — the foam itself doesn't set up correctly, often with a smell, shrinkage, or a soft, spongy texture. Overspray is foam that cured completely normally, just on the wrong surface. They're unrelated issues with different causes and different fixes.
Once cured, SPF is chemically inert and isn't considered a health hazard sitting on a surface. The concern with overspray is physical — surface damage or an unattractive mess — not chemical exposure from cured material.
Timing & urgency
Most SPF reaches a firm, rigid state within roughly 30-60 minutes of landing on a surface, with full chemical cure continuing over about 24 hours. The easy-removal window while it's still soft is much shorter — often just minutes.
No, but sooner is meaningfully easier and lower-risk for the surface. Fresh overspray removes with less effort than overspray that's had days or weeks of UV and heat exposure to fully bond in.
Yes — every surface we cover has a real removal path even for fully cured, older overspray. It generally requires more thorough scraping or a more aggressive process than fresh overspray, and in some cases a higher risk of surface impact, but it's not a lost cause.
Removal by surface
Automotive paint and clear coat, by far. The foam itself isn't the risk — metal blades, strong solvents, and hot-panel scrubbing are what actually damage a car's finish, which is why we recommend professional removal for anything beyond light, fresh overspray on a vehicle.
Glass and plain poured concrete are the most forgiving — both are hard, non-porous, and tolerant of scraping and pressure washing without much risk of lasting damage.
Stucco's rough, textured surface gives cured foam far more surface area to mechanically grip into than a smooth surface would. Full removal on heavier coverage often requires enough abrasion to also damage the texture, which is why a color-matched patch is sometimes the more practical fix.
Cured foam bonded to a leaf or branch generally doesn't come off intact, but the fix is usually pruning the affected growth rather than the plant itself being harmed — most shrubs and trees tolerate losing some foliage, especially in growing season.
Causes & prevention
Wind carrying atomized liquid foam past the intended target before it lands and cures, combined with gaps in masking or coverage and, sometimes, applicator technique or a poorly calibrated spray gun.
Most experienced crews treat sustained wind or gusts above roughly 15-20 mph as a hard stop for outdoor application, not a judgment call to push through on a tight schedule.
